Most people in the business of buying and selling believe that employing the services of a wholesale supplier is the best avenue to get great deals and source products at the cheapest prices. While this is partially true, there are often some other channels that you can explore that will get you even greater prices on goods to resell, which means more profits and less effort for you.

The process where you can source products at cheaper than wholesale prices is by utilizing merchants of closeouts, overstocks and liquidations. Some wholesale suppliers will also deal in these items, you just may not have been aware of their presence. Sourcing these products can net your great profits, however there are some things that you should understand before you look into the world of closeouts, overstock items and liquidations.

It’s important that when you opt to source any wholesale products, and that includes overstock items, closeouts and liquidations, that you know you are conducting business with the base source. If you are unsure that you are buying from the base source, then you might find yourself paying marked up prices for products that don’t need to be costing you a fortune.

Yet this doesn’t mean that you should try and go directly to the business where the overstock items are coming from, as most companies have strict supply agreements in place with wholesale liquidators to take these products off their hands. It’s these wholesale liquidators that you, the retailer, is able to purchase overstock items from.

So here are some tips to help you get started in sourcing overstock items:

1. Ask the stores who buys their overstocks and returns. Normally they will gladly give you the contact details of their overstock items merchants, but other times they may not be willing to disclose this information. A good point to note is that some of the larger stores won’t tell you where their overstock items are processed for fear of returns scams.

2. Ask the stores what they do with their overstock merchandise. Even if they won’t directly tell you where they are sold to, you can find out whether they utilize a liquidation wholesale supplier or if they simply discount it themselves or send products to their own outlet stores.

3. If you are in the position that you would like to become a dealer of overstock items, you can ask the store what the route is to become a supplier. Most likely you will need to have some sort of business created and be able to assure them that you have the ability to purchase large volumes of stock.

4. Do some research. Although many overstock products are not allowed to be advertised as being from the store they were obtained, if you know your product ranges, you will realize that you are able to gauge which products came from where. Know what you want to purchase and the right prices to pay and you will be on the road to success with reselling overstock items.
